Some stories never get old—and Moana is definitely one of them.
Last July 12, our CebuanaDiaries crew had the chance to attend the special screening of Disney's live-action Moana at SM Seaside City Cebu, and it turned out to be an evening filled with music, nostalgia, and a little bit of Disney magic.
Even before the movie started, you could already feel the excitement around the Mountain Wing Atrium. Families, Disney fans, and kids dressed in island-inspired outfits gathered for the event, making it feel like everyone was about to set sail on the same adventure.
One of the highlights before the screening was the live performance by Kai Montinola, who instantly set the mood with songs that brought everyone closer to the world of Motunui. It was the perfect way to kick off the evening before we all made our way to Cinema 4.
And then, the adventure began.
As someone who loved the animated version, I honestly didn't know what to expect from the live-action adaptation. But within the first few scenes, it was easy to see how much care went into bringing the story to life.

Catherine Laga'aia beautifully portrays Moana, capturing both her determination and vulnerability. She made the character feel relatable while staying true to the Moana we've all come to love. Of course, Dwayne Johnson returns as Maui, bringing his signature humor, charm, and heart to the role. Their chemistry made every scene enjoyable to watch.
Visually, the film is absolutely stunning. From the crystal-clear ocean and lush islands to the breathtaking encounters at sea, every scene felt immersive. The visual effects blended naturally with the practical sets, making the world of Moanafeel even more magical on the big screen.
The soundtrack also deserves a special mention. Hearing familiar songs like "How Far I'll Go" and "We Know the Way" inside a packed cinema brought back so many memories. There were even moments when you could hear people softly singing along, making the experience even more special.
More than the visuals and music, what makes Moana timeless is its message. It's a story about finding your purpose, embracing who you are, and having the courage to keep moving forward even when the journey feels uncertain. Those themes remain just as powerful in this live-action version.
Walking out of the cinema, I found myself smiling, not just because the movie was beautifully made, but because it reminded me why this story resonates with so many people.
Thank you, Disney Philippines, for inviting CebuanaDiaries to be part of this special screening. It was a wonderful evening, and one we'll definitely remember.
If you're planning to watch Moana, I'd say it's a journey worth taking with family and friends. Some adventures are simply better when shared.
