In today's digital world, social media has become more than just a place to connect with friends or discover the latest trends. It has also become a powerful influence on how young Filipinos spend, save, and think about money. Recognizing this, Metrobank is encouraging students to become more intentional not only with their finances but also with the content they consume online.
During the second leg of its Moneygurado Campus Series, Metrobank visited Centro Escolar University (CEU) Manila, where more than 100 students participated in conversations about financial literacy, responsible spending, scam awareness, and the growing influence of social media on financial decision-making.
One topic that resonated with students was how algorithms shape purchasing habits. Many admitted that products often appear on their feeds almost instantly after simply thinking or talking about them.
"Sometimes you're just thinking about an item and it's already there on your feed," one student shared, echoing a familiar experience among today's digital generation.
Metrobank highlighted that financial decisions are often influenced by emotions before they become matters of budgeting.
"Money decisions are emotional before they are mathematical. They start with FOMO (fear of missing out), pakikisama, hiya, and utang na loob. Every scroll on your phone now comes with a suggestion to spend, but not every piece of content should end with a checkout button. Some should leave you financially mindful," Metrobank explained during the session.
To help students navigate these daily influences, Metrobank introduced Earnest (@earnestph), its financial education platform on TikTok and Instagram. Through engaging and easy-to-understand content, Earnest helps young Filipinos better understand personal finance while encouraging critical thinking and responsible money management.
The platform covers practical topics including budgeting, saving, debt management, investing, scam awareness, and responsible spending, making financial education more accessible to today's social media generation.
The discussion also emphasized the importance of having trusted financial voices in digital spaces, where advice is abundant but not always accurate.
"It's important that banks are on social media because that's where students like us are," one participant shared, highlighting how credible institutions can make financial learning more accessible.
Students also recognized that learning about money doesn't stop inside the classroom. Reliable financial content can help them avoid impulsive spending, develop healthier money habits, and make better long-term financial decisions.
As part of the program, Metrobank introduced the latest episode of its Moneygurado docuseries, The Price of Hiya. Featuring historian Prof. Xiao Chua, the episode explores how Filipino culture and social expectations shape conversations about money and influence financial choices.
The docuseries encourages more open discussions about personal finance while reinforcing that financial resilience begins with informed decisions, healthy habits, and access to reliable financial guidance.
Through the Moneygurado Campus Series, Metrobank continues its commitment to making financial education more relevant and accessible to young Filipinos. By bringing meaningful discussions directly to schools and complementing them with digital learning platforms, the bank hopes to equip the next generation with the confidence, knowledge, and mindset needed to make smarter financial decisions.
In a world where algorithms constantly compete for attention, Metrobank reminds students that financial mindfulness begins with one simple habit: train your feed before it trains you.
