Gabi-i sa Kabilin

A cultural dance presented in front of the YAP- SAN DIEGO Ancestral house at the Gabi-i sa Kabilin

For the love of my country and my history, I passionately spent my night with the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation  Inc. Event - " The Gabii sa Kabilin" (A Night of Heritage) last May 27, 2016 from 6pm to midnight. It is a walk about our history and old places in Cebu that gives significance to our stories as Cebuanos. It gives us a glimpse of how Cebu was before and what are identity is. Having the privilege to received an invitation from RAFI through the Cebu Bloggers Society, I did not let this night passed without witnessing how this event would somehow tells me our history.

This year's event features 41 destinations in the cities of Cebu, Talisay, Mandaue and Lapu-Lapu. Transportations ( like tartanillas, vans, buses) are included with the ticket for Php 150/ person but free for children below 7 years old. And its theme is "Forging Peoples." They are showcasing Cebuanos multicultural orientations like Spanish, Chinese, Americans, Japanese and etc. The mixture of all these influence encompasses and contributes to the complex personalities of the Cebuanos.

It was my first time to experience the said event and truly, it was all worth it. I have been to Vigan City twice and I always love going back to Vigan City because of their Calle Crisologo which preserves the old Vigan during the Spanish Era and I was awed seeing that during the Gabi-i sa Kabilin - Cebu was turned into a Vigan like City but even bigger and I love it! Not only knowing our history but the event allows people to experience the old Cebu. Seeing the youth from the different schools enjoying the tour put a smile on my face. They were able to listened to Cebuano songs, declamations, and poems. There were also Cebuano delicacies available and cultural dances.

Harana at Gabi-i sa Kabilin

The highlight of my tour was watching the harana. It showed how men before used to court the women which they would sing songs to them with a guitar. It was truly a night of history. It's more of a time machine bringing us back to the past.
