Unang Hakbang: A Journey of Faith, Hope, and First Steps Toward a Brighter Future

In the remote mountains of Talangtang and the far-flung coastal villages of Inogbong, Bataraza, children grow up in a world far from the conveniences of the city—where roads are rugged, schools are scarce, and dreams often feel out of reach. Yet, amidst these challenges, a light continues to shine—Unang Hakbang, an initiative that believes in the power of first steps.

The Heart Behind the Mission

This movement was not born out of mere charity but out of a deep, unwavering burden to help. Ate Bing Abela, a former teacher and school principal, and her husband, Kuya Brix Abela, a chemical engineer and environmental consultant, never imagined they would be called to serve the children of Palawan’s most isolated communities. But when they led a Bible study group among workers in the area, they learned about the struggles of the Palau'an children in the mountains and the Badjao children in Inogbong. They knew they couldn’t turn away.

What began as a simple desire to help soon turned into something far greater—a mission to lay a foundation for these children, to equip them with confidence from a young age so they could have a fighting chance at a better future. That’s how Unang Hakbang—which means "First Step”—was born.

Turning Desolation into Hope

Kuya Brix, already known for his groundbreaking work in turning mining waste into thriving forests, had been recognized for his efforts in environmental restoration. But alongside his scientific achievements, he and Ate Bing saw another kind of restoration that needed to happen—not of land, but of lives.

These children, some of whom had never stepped into a classroom, were given a chance to learn. Not just academically, but in ways that would shape their character, their dreams, and their confidence.

Now, Unang Hakbang continues to grow. Soon, its 8th learning center will open, a testament to how deeply rooted this mission has become. What makes it even more special is that the teachers are chosen from within the communities—people who grew up among the children, who understand their struggles, their stories, and their dreams. These teachers do more than educate; they nurture, they guide, and they inspire.

A Legacy That Lives On

Kuya Brix is no longer here to see the seeds he and Ate Bing planted continue to flourish, but his legacy lives on. His family, along with the dedicated Unang Hakbang team, carries the mission forward. And despite the challenges, one thing remains clear—God has never left them.

Every day, He continues to provide, sending people who bring blessings to the children, ensuring that the mission thrives. What may seem like small acts—donations, volunteers, a kind word of support—are miracles in themselves, making sure that every Unang Hakbang child has the chance to dream beyond their circumstances.

When Dreams Take Flight

Years have passed since the first steps of Unang Hakbang, and now, the children they once taught to read and write have proven themselves worthy of awards. Graduates from the program have emerged as top students in their elementary and high schools, walking onto stages they once thought were beyond their reach.

For many of us, education is a given. But for these children, it is a miracle. It is a bridge to a life where they are no longer bound by the limitations of where they were born but empowered by what they have learned.

A Journey Beyond Travel

When we set out on this journey with Cebuana Diaries, it was never just about seeing places—it was about meeting people, about finding purpose in every step. To sit with the children of Unang Hakbang, to hear their laughter, to see their eyes light up even for a day—it was a privilege beyond words.

We came to give, but we left with so much more—a reminder that God moves in ways we cannot always see, planting seeds of hope in the most unexpected places.

To Ate Bing, the Abela family, and the entire Unang Hakbang team, thank you for showing us what it means to serve with faith, with love, and with a vision for the future. The work you do does not just change lives—it saves them.

And to the children of Unang Hakbang—keep taking those first steps. Because every step forward is a step toward something greater than you could ever imagine.
